An urban and street art installation paying tribute to the Masters of the history of art



Opera Gallery London and ANV in association with Butterfly are pleased to present URBAN MASTERS – an alternative art installation giving street and urban artists a chance to render homage to the masters, masterpieces and muses that have influenced their journey through the world of art and played a part in who they are nowadays.

URBAN MASTERS is an intense urban display in a former Victorian factory in London’s trendy yet subversive Shoreditch area. It will present the works of 33 of the world’s best street artists of the moment:

Opera Gallery is renowned for proposing very high standard exhibitions of street and urban art. This will be the biggest urban and street art exhibition yet hosted by Opera Gallery in London, and most certainly one of the most important events on the London street art scene this year.

With a broad scope of contemporary urban and street artworks and installations, URBAN MASTERS attempts to capture the feelings and experience of the artists who were invited to give their personal interpretation on the marks left by art history-makers.

The exhibition will also offer attendees a unique opportunity to meet some of the artists involved as there will be a poster / book signing featuring many of the aforementioned artists on the day of the public opening of the show:

Best known for the distinctive female centrepieces of his paste ups and murals on the walls of Melbourne, globetrotting street artist Rone returns to his home town for his first local show of 2012 in the more conventional surroundings of Collingwood’s Backwoods Gallery.

Fall from Grace sees Rone continue to showcase his female muse, but in a different light across 12 new works – three on canvas (including one triptych), four on brick and four on paper, all peeled, tattered and aged to reflect the outdoor environment he’s accustomed to working in.

Fall from Grace explores the idea of personal change through the rise and fall of a modern heroine, utilising the textures of hand painted signage, torn bill posters and deteriorating walls to symbolise the evolution of his lead character; how beauty can hide the darkest scars; how behind every light there is darkness. Inspired by recent travels through the faded beauty of Miami and Cuba, he draws on a palette of muted colours to pay homage of the 1980s – a time when style, questionable or otherwise, was all that mattered.

“We all have moments in our lives that make us who we are,” says Rone of the message at the heart of Fall from Grace. The scale of the works may not reach the epic heights he’s already reached on walls in London, Paris and Hawaii this year, but the scale of his ambition is as impressive as ever.
