Port Vila, Vanuatu – 2013
A wall I painted with some local kids in Vanuatu.
There was no real plan to this I just asked if I could paint this wall and I thought it would be great to get the kids to help. I marked up the outlines and was surrounded by the local kids so I gave them paint brushes and put them to work.
It was hectic with so many people to paint the same thing but it was an incredible opportunity to meet and work with people from a different culture.
Word spread fast about the wall and at one stage we had 50+ people watching us paint, even the local paper came down.
Thanks to everyone I met, and a special thanks to all those who helped:

Fantastic work! Awesome involving the local community like this.
Love it so much – makes my heart sing : )
Beautiful work, but the portrait is of a European beauty, no? I can’t help but wonder if it would have been wiser to have used a model of Melanesian descent to celebrate and/or confirm the local aesthetic? I know that growing up in the US and being inundated by images of women that didn’t look like me was difficult at times . . . on the other hand, Vanuatu is supposedly known for the happiness and well being of its people . . . so maybe they’re capable of appreciating a kind gesture and crazy art skills without reading too much into it . . . which is what I may be doing right now
